1899- Episode 1 Summary & Recap

Memories

The series starts of with Maura Franklin (Emily Beecham) having a dream or recounting a distant memory. She was in an asylum and she screamed to see her brother who was on the Prometheus ship. She claimed that her memory was tampered  with.

When Maura woke up, she was on the Kerberos ship. She recited that the year was 1899 and she had scars on her wrists, indicating that she had been locked up before. Not long after, she noticed the letter from her brother which asked Maura to meet him in New York as he had found out what their father did. The letter was also labelled Henry. It was also shown that the Prometheus ship had been missing for four months.

As Maura settled in the dining room, multiple multi-lingual passengers of the ship chatted and Mrs Wilson tried to make small talk. It was revealed that Maura was a female doctor from the UK and is travelling alone. They were interrupted when a man with a scar on his face from the lower deck, Krester (Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen) came running into the room demanding a doctor for his sister. Krester was soon dragged back to the lower deck but Maura came to his rescue and helped his pregnant sister, Tove (Clara Rosager) turn the baby around. After that, Maura met the captain, Eyk Larsen (Andreas Pietschmann).

Extending help

Not long after, the ship received a signal from a nearby ship via a repeated set of coordinates code. Believing that this could be the lost Prometheus ship, Eyk asked to turn the boat around, towards the potential direction of the Prometheus. He announced this further in the dining hall, but the decision was met with frustration and anger. The passengers abroad the ship really want to head to New York as soon as possible. The thought of turning back seemed to scare them.

When the team eventually found the lost ship, Eyk appeared even more invested and demanded to paddle a lifeboat to the Prometheus to save any remaining lives. Maura volunteered as she’s a doctor. A Spanish priest, Ramiro (José Pimentão) was asked to join to give solace to any victims. Around the same time, Jérôme, a French stowaway met Olek, a Polish stoker working at the bottom to fuel the ship. They were caught by Eyk and were asked to join the group to the Prometheus.

After the rescue group left, Ángel (Miguel Bernardeau), a Spanish man travelling with Ramiro crossed paths with Krester. Ángel seemed to take a liking towards Krester and his scar. Meanwhile, another group of passenger, a pair of women, Ling Yi and Yuk Je, from Hong Kong were trying to keep undercover by pretending to be Japanese. There was also Clémence (Mathilde Ollivier) and Lucien who got recently married through an arrangement.

Mysterious boy

Soon after Eyk, Maura, Ramiro, Olek and Jérôme got onto the Prometheus ship, the help signal from the ship stopped. The whole ship was abandoned and dark with no one to be seen. However, when the group got into the control room, they realized the telegraph was destroyed. After exploring for a while, they entered a room where Maura spotted a shiny beetle which headed to a locked cabinet. When Maura opened it, they found a young boy who had a black pyramid with him. He handed the pyramid block to Maura.

Meanwhile, a mysterious man swam from the Prometheus to the Kerberos ship. He left another shiny beetle which led him to a room next to Maura’s on the ship.

The boy handed the pyramid block to Maura.
