The Law According to Lidia Poët - Episode 2 Summary & Recap
Death of Mrs De Santis
Late one night, a worker at the De Santis Chocolate factory named Anita was seen rushing her carriage. She was stopped by the police and they found a dead body of a woman inside. The dead body was that of the factory owner’s 2nd wife, Elena.
Anita’s brother and sister-in-law had heard about the previous case. So, they went to Enrico’s house hoping to get him to represent Anita. At that time, Enrico was away, and so Lidia took the client on behalf of her brother. She visited Anita in prison, but Anita was very reluctant to reveal anything. After some persuasion, Anita revealed that she left her carriage unattended that night and when she returned, Mrs De Santis was already in the carriage. She was bleeding profusely, but she was still breathing. So, Anita was trying to rush her to the hospital.
Anita also told Lidia that she was part of the worker’s strike at the factory few months back, and Mrs. De Santis had actually helped them get a pay raise. When Anita was fired, Mrs. De Santis also got Anita a job at a tobacco factory. Therefore, Anita had no reason to kill the lady. Lidia then requested the judge to conduct a volumetric glove test on Anita. She had to do so under Enrico’s name.
When Enrico returned, he was furious that Lidia took on a case for an anarchist. However, he still alowed Lidia to solve the case on his own. Few days later, Lidia followed Jacopo to the de Santis factory under pretense of being a reporter. There, she met Mr De Santis and his son from his first marriage, Leone. Lidia found it odd that Mr De Santis’s office had many touches of a woman, like flowers, vases and tea. She reported her theory that Elena was actually governing the factory, to Jacopo. Lidia also thought that Leone may have killed Elena to get control of the factory.
Jacopo that brought Lidia to an opium brothel to look for Leone. There, Leone admitted that he was the one that introduced Elena to his father, but he was surprised when Elena chose her father instead of him. He loved Elena, and so Lidia ruled him out as a possible suspect.
The next day when the judge conducted the volumetric glove test on Anita, the test revelaed that Anita was not lying when she said she did not kill Elena. However, when the prosecutor questioned Anita about a note found on Elena’s dress saying “Meet me at 9pm by the river”, Anita was caught lying. Enrico and Anita personally questioned Anita later and found out that Elena and Anita were secretly dating.
Who killed Elena?
That night, Lidia and Jacopo broke into the factory office to look for evidence. Jacopo found a knife that looks like the murder weapon. It was newly polished even though it was located in a cupboard where everything is dusty. Meanwhile, Lidia used the copier and the residue ink to see the contents of the last letter printed. The letter was a dismissal letter to Rodolfo de Santis, Leone’s brother.
The two of them almost got caught by a guard that night, but they pretended to be a couple smootching to avoid being caught.
The next day, Enrico and Lidia met the De Santis family at a club and revealed that Rodolfo is the killer. After some push from Lidia, Rodolfo admitted to it. Elena was making pacts with the workers and so the company’s profitability is shortchanged. Plus, when Rodolfo found out that Elena had a relationship with Anita, he tried to get rid of Elena. But instead, Elena revelaed that Mr De Santis knew about it all along and fired Rodolfo. Feeling like he’s left with no choice but to protect the honor of his family, Rodolfo killed Elena.
When the case is done, Enrico received a warning from court to never allow a woman to argue a case on his behalf. Meanwhile, Lidia also received a warning to never step in court again.
